Gresham High goes into ‘secure’ after man threatens to ‘shoot up building’

Ten days after a student was arrested for bringing a fully-loaded gun to class, Gresham High School went into “secure” after a community member was overheard threatening to “shoot the school up.”

Around 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, a school-wide announcement was made for teachers and students to stay within their classrooms. Because of a planned fire drill that same morning, Principal Erika Whitlock made an additional announcement that it was “not a drill.”

The building was secured because of a continuation of that earlier incident. The 17-year-old student, who was arrested and is facing charges, had threatened a community member at the Gresham Transit Center Friday, Sept. 20, while walking to school. That same day the community member called the school with a description of the student, prompting the search and eventual arrest.

This latest incident allegedly involved that same man. Teachers said he arrived at the front office of Gresham High demanding a meeting with Principal Whitlock. It is unclear what his motives were.
