Triangle families desperate to reach loved ones missing after Helene; Ham Radio operators help relay messages

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — With hundreds of people still missing in Western North Carolina and little communication from those hard-hit areas, people here in the Triangle are desperate to find missing loved ones.

“I’m just scared for my brother,” said Alyssa Becker, who lives in Raleigh. “I just want to hear his voice.”

Becker is hundreds of miles away from the devastating flooding in Western North Carolina, but she’s doing everything she can to get in touch with her brother, Jordan Rasbeck. He and his girlfriend Swan Walker live in a mobile home in Fletcher, a rural area outside Asheville.

“It’s just torture really,” Becker added. “Waiting by my phone. I’ve called him just so many times every hour just to see if I can get a moment of cell service.”

She last spoke to her brother Thursday night. Since then, she’s spent her days filling out forms and reaching out to everyone she can think of to try to reach her brother and make sure he’s okay. In addition to 211, which is the official number to report missing people, social media groups have been created where thousands are sharing information.
