Augusta leaders say Richmond County residents will get water back “soon”

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s been 24 hours since Augusta leaders announced a water outage expected to affect the entire city.

At a news conference, Mayor Garnett Johnson announcing a boil water advisory, effective immediately.

“This is being done out of an abundance of caution, and it’s due to system-wide low pressures, caused by the impacts of Hurricane Helene,” said Johnson.

This adds to the nearly 300 boil water advisories around the state as of Monday morning.

Utilities Department Director Wes Byne says everything south of Gordon Highway is operating thanks to generators, and homeowners in some areas will get water back over the next few days.

“We expect to begin providing water service back to west Augusta, the hill area, parts of Tobacco Road, and Fort Eisenhower sometime tonight or tomorrow,” Byne said.

Chief Antonio Burden confirmed the city’s plans to open additional locations to supply water.

“Citizens will be able to bring their own jugs to fill at these locations,” said Burden. “In addition to those sites, we will continue giving bottled water at the Municipal Building, Southgate Plaza, and Diamond Lakes.”
