Two kids, ages 1 and 4, dead after Sunday kitchen fire at Raleigh apartment, officials say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Two young children are dead after a small kitchen fire broke out inside an apartment in Raleigh early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

According to the Raleigh Fire Department, crews responded just after 6 a.m. to a report of cardiac arrest on the 1800 block of Cantwell Court. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a small fire that erupted in the kitchen, but it was quickly extinguished, fire officials said.

EMS crews transported a 1-year-old and 4-year-old child to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Both later died as a result of their injuries, Raleigh fire officials said.

The mother of the two children was the only other person inside the apartment at the time of the fire. She didn’t report any injuries.
