Kentucky Sheriff Retires Amid Murder Charge

Letcher County Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines, accused of murdering Judge Kevin Mullins, has announced his retirement. Stines’ attorneys stated that the decision was made to allow a successor to take over his duties while he faces legal proceedings.

Stines, 43, was arrested after Mullins, 54, was found shot to death inside his courthouse chambers on September 19. Stines pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder last week. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had previously called for Stines’ resignation, stating that Letcher County needed an active and working sheriff. If Stines had refused to resign, Beshear could have initiated a removal process.

Stines could face the death penalty if convicted. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
