FL Condo Owners Already Assessed Tens of Thousands For Repairs Must Leave Condos Deemed Unsafe

Many Floridians are aware that the Surfside condo tragedy of 2021 increased requirements for condo associations in Florida. Because of this, the Sunshine State’s condo associations must now conduct more frequent inspections. Sometimes, these inspections result in expensive repairs from homeowners which can require special assessments. Residents of one Fort Lauderdale condo – at Springbrook Gardens – have had to pay tens of thousands for repairs. Despite this, their condos were just deemed unsafe and now they must leave.

About The Condos In Question: Springbrook Gardens is a smaller condo unit in South Florida on the Intracoastal Waterway. It has 18 units and was built in 1978. Many of the condo’s residents are reportedly senior citizens who have already been assessed tens of thousands of dollars for inspections and repairs.

Why Did Residents Have To Leave?: In late September of 2024, an engineer determined that the building was no longer safe, so the certificate of occupancy that was issued in July was revoked, meaning that residents were forced to vacate. Fixes could reportedly cost over $1 million.
