More than 85,000 Appalachian Power customers remain without power across Appalachia

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — More than 85,000 Appalachian Power customers remain without power across Appalachia in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene.

According to a Storm Response Update from Appalachian Power, around 85,600 Appalachian Power customers are without power in West Virginia, Virginia, and Tennessee, and crews from 21 states, including ones as far as Wisconsin, arrived to help with power restoration.

The amount of power outages that remain affected by the storm include:

  • Around 64,600 in Virginia
  • More than 19,000 in West Virginia
  • Around 2,000 in Tennessee

Power was restored to more than 70 percent, or around 196,400 Appalachian Power customers, since the worst of the outages on Friday, September 27, 2024.

Almost 75 percent of the damage assessment is complete, and crews discovered around 2,100 spans of fallen wire and damaged equipment, which included 500 poles, 285 crossarms and 120 transformers. However storm damage, including flooding, debris, and fallen trees, made assessing the amount of damage difficult.
