New Convoy District gateway sign lit for the first time

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The new gateway sign in the Convoy District was lit for the first time Monday night, marking a new milestone in a multi-year plan to revitalize the area.

The city designated Convoy as a Pan-Asian Cultural District back in 2020 to coincide with an update to the Kearny Mesa Community Plan . Now, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said the gateway sign is not only a symbol of community identity and pride, but also a way for the city to officially recognize and promote the Convoy District.

Unlike other community gateway signs around the city, the Convoy District symbol is vertical, which symbolizes “how San Diego’s Asian American and Pacific Islander community is always reaching for greater heights,” said Kent Lee, the city councilmember who represents the Convoy corridor and District 6.

In a May 2023 press conference, Gloria described the new Convoy sign as a marker for the district as a “cultural destination,” similar to those in other city neighborhoods with those landmarks like North Park, Hillcrest and Little Italy.
