MEADVILLE — Fairview’s top two golfers recorded rounds in the 70s during Monday’s District 10 Class 2A girls team tournament.
That’s why upset sounded like the wrong word applied to the Tigers’ victory against Hickory.
Given the Hornets’ status, though, it was still appropriate. Fairview not only defeated the PIAA’s three-time defending champions, but potentially denied them the opportunity for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.
The Tigers, amid cloudy and damp conditions at The Country Club of Meadville, saw their three low golfers combine for a score of 239 to Hickory’s 246.
“This was one day we definitely marked down on our calendar,” Fairview’s Cora Hirz said. “We’re really excited our hard work all year ‒ and really the last three or four years developing our program – has paid off.
“We’re excited to move on to the next step, but we are going to celebrate and enjoy this.”
The Tigers are assured a trip to the Oct. 23 PIAA team golf tournament at State College, as is McDowell.
