Wylie ISD sent out a statement Monday afternoon regarding a loaded gun found on the Wylie West Junior High campus.
This afternoon administrators at the school were alerted that a student had a weapon on campus, and they later discovered the student was in possession of a loaded firearm in their backpack, according to the statement.
No threats were made to students or staff during this incident, and the district reminded students that weapons of any kind are not allowed on school grounds, and being in possession of one will result in serious consequences, the statement said.
The student was detained immediately and the incident has been referred to the Abilene Police Department for further investigation, the release said.
The district urged parents to talk with their child about items not permitted at school and to encourage them to speak up and report any safety concerns.
“By working together, we can all ensure the safety of our students and staff,” the district’s statement said.
