Red Cross worker from Illinois says help needed in hurricane disaster zone

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTVO) — Clean-up in the southeast region of the United States continues after the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene.

The American Red Cross has sent thousands of disaster workers, including 30 from Illinois, to the region.

Amanda Venvertloh is one of those, stationed in Tallahassee, Florida, part of the hurricane’s 500-mile path of destruction that left over 130 people dead, especially in hard-hit North Carolina.

“Really, what we’re seeing right now, in my experience, is just a need for help in the community. Whether that’s shelter (or) food, power outages are still around all of Florida,” she said.

Helene was the third hurricane to his Tallahassee and the surrounding Big Bend region in the last year, leaving an estimated $10 billion-plus in damages.

Red Cross spokesperson Mara Thompson said, “The Red Cross is responding to about twice as many billion-dollar disasters as we were even five years ago. We are in a state of continuous response where we are constantly sending volunteers, resources to all of these disasters that are happening nationwide. And we could use all of the help we can get.”
