California advances oil refinery rules that Lombardo targeted in letter to Newsom

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — Lawmakers in California passed a bill on Tuesday that could mean higher gas prices for Nevadans.

That’s what Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo has said will be the net result, even sending a letter to Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom trying to head off the legislation.

On Sept. 10, Lombardo and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, signed a letter appealing to Newsom to stop rules that would require oil refineries to keep enough supplies on hand to prevent spikes in gasoline prices. They believe stockpiling that fuel in California could cause gas prices to go up in neighboring states that get most of their supply through California ports.

“The people of Nevada and Arizona should not have to foot the bill for California’s misguided policies — especially when it comes to higher gas prices,” Lombardo said. “Lowering fuel costs is a bipartisan issue, and I’m grateful to partner with Governor Hobbs as we fight back against policies that will raise prices and cause regional economic disruption. I urge Governor Newsom and the California legislature to reconsider this harmful legislation during their special session and to include Nevada and Arizona in policy discussions moving forward.”
