Eastern Shore coffee war brewing, new Starbucks in Fairhope debate takes flight

FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A coffee battle is brewing in Fairhope as the feud between local and global chains is soaring to new heights, literally.

A banner plane flew above Fairhope on Tuesday morning and spread the message of a “David versus Goliath” kind of fight.

“We don’t see planes with banners around Fairhope pretty much ever,” Anne Dorman, a Fairhope resident, said. “It’s just unique and creative, and I love it; it’s genius.”

Starbucks has spread down the Eastern Shore this year, opening two new locations off Highway 98.

William Hanes owns Fairhope’s Provision and Provision on the Fly. He’s also the mastermind behind the banner plane. He said that supporting local companies is part of what gives the town its charm.

“I think when you’re locally owned, you just are more in touch with your town and the owners live here,” Hanes said. “We’re pouring 100% of our dollars back into the community.”
