Mets Triumph Over Brewers in Wild Card Opener

In a thrilling Wild Card Series opener, the New York Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4. Mark Vientos drove in two crucial runs in the fifth inning, breaking a tie and propelling the Mets to victory.

Despite earning their playoff berth only on Monday, the Mets showed resilience and determination against the Brewers. The win puts them one game away from advancing to the NL Division Series.

The Mets trailed early but fought back, scoring five runs in the fifth inning to take control of the game. Jesse Winker and J.D. Martinez also contributed RBIs for New York.

The Brewers, who have struggled in the playoffs in recent years, lost their 10th of their last 11 playoff games. Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio both had multiple hits for Milwaukee, with Chourio becoming the youngest player to have two hits in his playoff debut.

The Mets, playing just 22 hours after their doubleheader in Atlanta, displayed remarkable tenacity. They answered the Brewers’ early lead with three runs in the second and responded with five runs in the fifth after Milwaukee had regained the advantage.

The Brewers’ bullpen, which had the second-best ERA in the majors this season, failed to stop the Mets’ offensive surge. Joel Payamps and Aaron Ashby gave up crucial hits and walks, allowing New York to take the lead.

Mets starter Luis Severino recovered from a shaky start to pitch six innings, while José Buttó and Ryne Stanek combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

Sean Manaea will start Game 2 for the Mets, while Frankie Montas will take the mound for the Brewers.
