California drivers who are 70 years old and above will no longer need to take the written driver test when renewing their license.
Beginning October 1, drivers age 70-plus whose licenses expire as of 2024 won’t need to take the written knowledge test. According to DMV officials, the requirement was a policy, not the law.
Drivers with poor driving records will still need to take the written test according to the DMV.
Drivers 70 and older will still need to make a DMV office visit for a vision exam and updated photo when they renew their license.
It is estimated that approximately 2 million licensed drivers in California are age 70 or older.
