Vance Cites Source for Immigration-Housing Cost Claim

Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance provided the source of his claim that illegal immigration has driven up housing costs. During the vice presidential debate, Vance cited a study by the Federal Reserve that shows a correlation between increased illegal immigration and higher housing prices.

Vance also pointed to two other studies supporting his claim. One study, published in 2017, found that immigration inflows are associated with increases in rents and house prices in Metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The other study, from July 2024, reported that research has consistently shown that immigration increases government spending on housing, among other areas.
