Grandma Lends a Helping Hand to New Mom

Additional Coverage:

As a first-time mom, Hillary Wichlin welcomed her mother’s presence during her "confinement" period, a Taiwanese tradition.

Her mother took care of her and her newborn baby, Lily, preparing nutritious meals that promoted healing and feeding her when she couldn’t do it herself.

Confined to her room, Wichlin was not allowed to shower or leave the house according to tradition. However, her mother allowed her to shower occasionally with a "ginger rinse."

Her mother’s support not only eased the physical demands of postpartum recovery but also guarded Wichlin against postpartum depression.

Despite the 30-day confinement period being over, Wichlin’s mother remains, extending her support. Wichlin dreads the day her mother leaves and hopes she can move nearby to continue helping with childcare.
