NYC Mayor May Face More Charges

Additional Coverage:

New York City Mayor Eric Adams may face additional charges, according to prosecutors at a recent court hearing. Prosecutors also believe more defendants will be involved.

The investigation into Adams began in 2021, before he became mayor. Prosecutors allege that Adams conspired to accept illegal foreign contributions and attempted to create the impression that he had paid for certain flights.

Witnesses involved in the alleged misconduct and those who made illegal donations are expected to testify. Prosecutors claim Adams tampered with witnesses, including one who was instructed not to cooperate with the FBI.

Adams has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer has requested that the bribery charge be dismissed and sanctions be imposed on the prosecution for alleged leaks. The lawyer wants a speedy trial, with a suggested end date in March, to allow Adams to run for reelection in 2025.

Prosecutors have proposed a trial date in May, estimating the trial to last four weeks. The defense believes the trial will be shorter. The judge has given prosecutors until October 18 to respond to the defense motions.

Adams, a Democrat, has vowed to fight the charges and remains in his position as mayor.
