Dearborn man among those killed in bombing raids in Southern Lebanon

A 56-year-old Dearborn man was among those killed in southern Lebanon Tuesday in an Israeli airstrike, his family said.

“My father, Hajj Kamel Ahmad Jawad, returned to his Lord after being hit by an Israeli airstrike while trying to save innocent lives in his hometown of Nabatieh, Lebanon,” his daughter Nadine Kamel Jawad said in a statement.

The Free Press could not independently confirm the details of Jawad’s death.

Jawad said she had spoken with her father by phone shortly before he died. The bombings were ongoing and the impact from one was close enough to knock him down. She said he got back up and insisted on staying to help.

“In his last days, he chose to stay near the main hospital in Nabatich to help the elderly, disabled, injured, and those who simply couldn’t financially afford to flee,” she wrote. “He served as their guardian, provided them with food, mattresses, and other comforts, and anonymously paid off their debts.”

The Israeli military has bombed more than 300 sites across southern Lebanon it says were associated with Hezbollah as part of an ongoing conflict there. The Lebanese Health Ministry said at least 500 people have been killed and another 1,600 injured in the bombings.
