Residents in Tampa neighborhood want construction paused during storm recovery

TAMPA, Fla (WFLA) — Some residents in the area of Hamilton Heath Drive are frustrated over construction crews blocking the road while they are trying to get their houses back in order after Hurricane Helene.

Hamilton Heath Drive is a narrow street with dead end, making it a challenge for people coming and going.

The road is near the Hillsborough River. The houses on the street were flooded with river water, up to three feet in some homes.

“We just went through a natural disaster. One of the worst in history,” said Aaron Mackenzie, a resident on the street.

He said just about everything they own now sits on the tight road.

Just a few weeks ago, the residents said Tampa Electric had subcontractors start the construction of taking electrical wires from above ground and moving them below.

“We are happy about what they are doing because it’s going to make our electrical system better,” Mackenzie said.

But he and others feel now is not the time to work on this.

“Today, they blocked off from about the trash cans down,” Crystal Davis said. “They can’t get to work. They can’t get their cars out. I can’t get my car out, these folks can’t get their car out. We’re stuck here.”
