Michigan State announces highest-ever enrollment, most students of color

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University on Thursday announced that its 2024-25 enrollment is its largest-ever.

The university reported 52,089 students enrolled. Last year, the university reported 51,316 students enrolled in the fall semester, its second-largest class at the time.

MSU said it welcomed 10,978 new undergraduate students, comprised of first-year students and transfer students, with 78% of them from Michigan. Combined with 30,526 returning students there are 41,234 undergraduate students, MSU’s highest total.

The school also reported the largest number of students of color attending the university, with nearly 28% of the domestic student body, about a 1 percentage point increase from last year.

MSU said enrollment includes international students from 138 countries, students from all 50 states and students from all 83 counties in Michigan.

The University of Michigan just barely beat MSU in their reported fall enrollment. U-M said 52,855 students are enrolled, just over 750 more than at MSU. This is the second year in a row that U-M’s reported fall enrollment was larger than MSU’s.
