Richmond County schools in Augusta extend Hurricane Helene closure more than a week

Richmond County students can put their bookbags down for a little bit longer.

Students were initially slated to return on Monday after being closed for several days due to Hurricane Helene . But the school system published a news release Thursday evening announcing students will not go back until Wednesday, Oct. 16 and will not have the scheduled distance learning day on Friday, Oct. 11. This is to ensure all schools open with power, water, internet, personnel, and clear bus routes.

Richmond County School System Nutrition Services is working with local agencies to identify food distribution sites to serve the community while schools and offices are closed.

“This week, we focused on our families, homes, and neighbors in need in the wake of the hurricane that impacted every community member,” said Richmond County Superintendent Kenneth Bradshaw. ” As we work towards returning to a state of normalcy, safety and accessibility for our staff and students is our highest priority. We know that many of you have concerns about lost instruction time. Right now, we ask that you focus on the safety of your families, and rest assured that we are considering several options that prioritize a smooth transition back to the classroom.”
