‘She’s homeless’: New Bedford woman struggling to find a place to stay after fire

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Sulema Caraballo is worried about her 66-year-old aunt, who is currently staying at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Her aunt Emilinda Agusto, who’s disabled and suffers from a number of medical conditions, was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after her apartment building caught fire over the weekend.

Though she wasn’t seriously injured, Caraballo said her aunt doesn’t want to be discharged until she knows where she will be staying.

“Right now she’s homeless,” Caraballo explained. “She doesn’t have a place to go.”

Finding Agusto a place to stay is a mission her friend Barbie Matos is taking seriously.

“[The city keeps telling me] to call here and call there, but I haven’t gotten any results,” Matos explained. “It’s all been dead ends.”

12 News reached out to the city regarding Agusto’s situation, to which a spokesperson said the fire response team is in contact with those who have been displaced.
