PRATTVILLE − The main branch of the Autauga Prattville Public Library will be closed for several weeks due to structural concerns.
The downtown building near the intersection of Doster Road and Selma Highway has been closed about a week after staff noticed “cracks” in the ceiling, said Ray Boles chairman of the library board. The front of the building is cordoned off by yellow caution tape.
Cracks can be seen in the mortar on the front brick wall of the structure.
“We contacted a structural engineer. They came out and looked at the building and said ‘shut it down to the public immediately,’” Boles said. “We are working on a plan to make repairs. That could take another three to four weeks.
“That will get us over the hump, but in the long run we will need a new library building.”
Staff and service have been shifted in the short term.
“We are paying our people, everyone is getting a check,” Boles said. “We have extended hours in the branches in Autaugaville, Billingsley and Marbury. Some staff are still working in the section of the main branch, where it is safe. They are working to catalogue books and other work.
