Water Lantern Festival to light up in Amarillo on Oct. 5

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to see firsthand when dozens of lit-up lanterns filled with wishes start floating on the water at sunset? Now’s your chance.

The Water Lantern Festival, voted the No. 1 Best Cultural Festival by USA TODAY , is coming to Amarillo for its inaugural run on Saturday, Oct. 5. Attendees of all ages will get to experience this event and create a magical memory as lanterns illuminate the water in a beautiful display. Other events scheduled to happen Saturday across the U.S. include locations in Birmingham, Alabama; San Fernando Valley, California; Houston; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The festival also made the USA TODAY Readers’ Choice Awards top 10 list in 2023 .

The Amarillo event is set for Oct. 5 at the Thompson Lake House Building on West Chaparral Street, which is located near the Ross Rogers Golf Course Lake in Thompson Park.

“This Water Lantern Festival creates a beautiful and unique way to share your hopes, dreams, and aspirations,” said Nate Sorensen, event director, in a news release. “It’s a night that you will never forget.”
