UVA Faculty Group Hosts Townhall on Future of On-Grounds Activism

Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): UVA Faculty will be hosting a community town hall event this upcoming Sunday, October 6th. The event is titled “Repression on Grounds: A Virtual Town Hall on May 4 and Its Aftermath” and has been organized by an organization of UVA Professors called “Faculty for Justice in Palestine”. According to a release, the intent of the meeting is to discuss the many events and aftereffects surrounding the incident on Grounds back on May 4th of this year, in which policeman broke up a pro-Palestinian encampment with riot gear. The faculty group is planning on using the meeting to put forth one possible plan for pro-Palestinian activism on Grounds going forward, especially after new rules governing protests and demonstrations were rolled out by the University earlier this summer, and the students’ involved in the encampment have only recently had the last of their University Judiciary Committee charges dropped. The release says it is time to “hear from faculty, staff and students what is really going on with regards to freedom of speech, academic freedom and protest rights at Jefferson’s University.”
