US Officials Seize Domains Used by Russian Hackers

US authorities and Microsoft have confiscated dozens of internet domains that Russian intelligence-linked hackers used to breach American government computer systems. The operation is part of a larger strategy to combat state-sponsored cyberattacks.

Hackers Targeted Government Officials, NATO

The seized domains were linked to the Callisto Group, a hacking team within Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). The group targeted government officials from allied nations, NATO, Ukraine, think tank researchers, and journalists.

Sophisticated Spear-Phishing Campaign

The hackers used the domains in a “sophisticated spear-phishing campaign.” They sent emails disguised as legitimate sources to trick victims into revealing sensitive information.

Microsoft Files Lawsuit

In addition to the government seizures, Microsoft has filed a civil lawsuit to take control of 66 internet domains used by Callisto Group. The company has identified 82 customers targeted by the hackers, including civil society organizations, journalists, and non-governmental groups.

Ongoing Attacks

Despite previous sanctions and indictments, the Callisto Group remains active. Microsoft warns that the hackers continue to target individuals and organizations essential to democracy. The US and its allies are working to disrupt and deter these malicious attacks.
