EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — A 32-year-old man is facing charges in a fatal hit-and-run crash in East El Paso early Monday morning, Sept. 30.

Rene Martinez was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and assault on a pregnant person after police allege he ran over 23-year-old Juan Flores Jr. around 2:20 a.m. Monday along the 1400 block of North Zaragoza and allegedly attacked his pregnant girlfriend after she confronted him about her suspicions he was involved.

Arrest documents show police obtained surveillance footage from the area surrounding Taco Tote, showing two groups of individuals fighting in the parking lot. Three people walked toward a black Ford Fusion in the parking lot when the other five appeared to throw a rock at it. Documents say it appeared the two groups were going to fight before the Fusion drove away and later turned around and sped toward the group.

Police allege the driver of the Fusion, later identified as Martinez, hit Flores, and Flores flew onto the hood of the car and attempted to hold on before he flew off and hit his head on the pavement.
