Failures in suicide prevention protocols at Overton-Brooks VA prompts response from Senators Cassidy, Kennedy

SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS ) – Louisiana Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy are demanding the Overton-Brooks VA Medical Center answer questions about a failure of suicide prevention protocols.

“Due to the tragic death of a veteran from suicide, we write to express our concern regarding recent revelations of the inadequate suicide prevention policies and practices at the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana,” wrote the senators .

The issues between the senators and the medical center came after a July report published by the Louisiana Office of the Inspector General (OIG) detailing compliance issues, specifically in the case of two patients referred to in the report as patients A and B. Patient A died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while patient B clinical risk for suicide was downgraded and his patient record flags (PRF) were removed.
