Georgia Power speaks on outage updates

ATLANTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Georgia Power says they are working to get power restored quickly and safely across the state — and some areas may be in the dark until October 13.

Georgia Power says linemen are working up to 16 hours in daylight to clear downed trees, fallen power lines and repair transformers to get power back up. So far, more than one million customers have had their power restored.

“Augusta we have the longest time timeline with 95% of that area at October 13, but the goal is to get back sooner. Savannah is only about 6,000 without power and then Macon and Valdosta are within the next couple of days,” said Matthew Kent, Georgia Power.

“Of course the goal is to get power safely — our linemen have been in the ground for a couple of weeks and make sure they are safe and with the utmost precision,” said Kent.

Georgia power says of the 8,000 transformer poles knocked off during Hurricane Helene, 3,000 were in Augusta, and 1,000 were in Savannah.

And due to that — it’s taking time to not just clear those poles but to rebuild them entirely.
