Hoosiers band together to fly supplies to victims of Hurricane Helene

GREENFIELD, Ind. – Hoosier pilots and airplane owners are banding together to help out victims of Hurricane Helene.

Bailey Purvis knew she had to help out the second she heard about Helene.

“We had gotten word on Sunday evening that they needed planes or pilots or both,” Purvis.

Purvis and her fiancé own an airplane at Indianapolis Regional Airport in Greenfield so they decided to get other local pilots together, to team up with the civilian crisis response team to launch “Operation Fill a Plane.”

Since she came up with the idea Tuesday, Purvis said they have received dozens of donations ranging from peanut butter and crackers to diapers.

The donations will go to North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, some of the areas hardest hit by Helene.

“There’s two tiny airports that they are flying into and then from there, they are getting bussed over. Helicopters are picking them up and actually dropping them off in people’s front yards or as close as we can get them,” said Purvis.
