SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – The Federal Trade Commission released an advisory, warning victims of Hurricane Helene about potential, post-disaster scams.
The biggest scams that victims could face are Clean-up & Repair scams and FEMA Impersonator scams, according to the FTC.
The FTC advises those who have been affected by Helene’s damage should be skeptical of anyone that offers immediate clean-up and repairs. Scammers may also quote outrageous prices, demand payment up front or lack the skills to properly repair damaged buildings.

You should also never pay by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or in cash. Do not make the final payment until the work is done and you are satisfied.
The FTC recommended that before you pay a contractor, ask for their ID’s and proof of insurance.
The FTC also warned that FEMA does not charge application fees, and that officials should not ask for money to “help you qualify.” Those who are interested in FEMA should visit their official website at FEMA.gov .
