Annual Walk to Defeat ALS raises money and awareness

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The community will gather in Jordan Valley Park on Saturday to walk in the name of an incurable disease. The ALS Association will be having its annual Walk to Defeat ALS fundraiser to raise money and awareness.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurological disease that causes the rapid loss of all muscle control and the ability to speak. Right now there is no known cure.

Jessica Springer organizer of the walk with the ALS Association says the walk is about more than just raising funds.

“It’s a day of healing and remembrance,” Springer said. “It’s also a great day for people who are going through it to know they’re not alone. So there’s solidarity as we come together and we support one another, knowing that we’re fighting to find a cure.”

The money raised will go towards supporting local families impacted by ALS, as well as research to find treatments and ultimately a cure for ALS.
