Why this northwestern Pa. community is holding a miniature bison hunt in October

The search is on for miniature bison around the Waterford area.

The Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society and WECAN Waterford are hosting their first ever Great Bison Hunt starting Monday and running through Oct. 31.

Through the month of October, 500 miniature bison will be hidden around the Waterford Borough from Hazel Street to Chestnut Street and Old Frank’s Resting Place.

The hunt begins Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the ball diamond in the center of town and is open to all.

“I thought how can we keep people moving and keep interest in the historical society,” said JoAnne Lenart-Weary, marketing coordinator for the historical society. “I came up with the idea of the bison hunt. I went to the board of the historical society and the We Can of Waterford group and they all were for it”

When posted on Facebook , it was shared more than 150 times in a matter of hours, which increased the amount of bison hidden.

The bison were created by third-grade students in McKean Elementary School with a 3D printer.
