Nick Saban Takes Lively Shot at ‘Stanford Steve’ on ‘College GameDay’

ESPN’s “College GameDay” is a popular Saturday morning staple for fans nationwide. Viewers tune in for expert analysis and captivating stories while also hearing a few jabs the team throws at one another.

One of those jabs on Saturday’s edition was between Nick Saban and Steve Coughlin, better known as “Stanford Steve.” Stanford Steve played tight end for Stanford University in the late 1990s and now serves as the expert betting advisor on “College GameDay.”

During Week 6 of the college football season, the flagship show visited the University of California for its game against the Miami Hurricanes. The California Golden Bears and the Stanford Cardinal are rivals. Stanford Steve took the opportunity to jab at the crowd, saying that the people who went to Cal only did so because they couldn’t get into Stanford.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach and current “College GameDay” analyst Nick Saban defended Cal fans and took a dig at Stanford Steve. Saban asked Stanford Steve if Stanford was so great, then why did he have a girlfriend who went to Cal?

“I’ve got a question for you,” Saban said. “If it was so great at Stanford, why did you have a girlfriend here at Cal?”
