Milton could bring gusty winds, rain to Savannah area by mid-week, forecasters say

Tropical Storm Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico Saturday and is expected to strengthen quickly into a hurricane as it moves across warm waters before likely making landfall on the Florida peninsula Wednesday morning.

The storm is then expected to move over Florida and continue tracking northeast into the Atlantic.

The Savannah area likely will feel some impacts beginning Wednesday and carrying over into Thursday, but they are not expected to be severe, said Emily McGraw, a meteorologist in the Charleston office of the National Weather Service .

Long arms: Helene shows growing reach of hurricanes well into Georgia and beyond, experts say

“There certainly will be some gusty winds, depending how close it gets there,” McGraw said Saturday. “We’re just not sure of the strength of the winds at this point.”

As of 11 a.m. Saturday, the National Hurricane Center reported a 10% chance that the Savannah area could experience tropical-storm-force winds from Milton.

On the coast, strong rip currents are possible on the Georgia coast as the storm moves into the Atlantic, she added.
