Rochester running back recovering after suffering serious head injury after hit Friday

SHENANGO — Rochester senior running back Carter Mason is recovering in a Pittsburgh area hospital after suffering a serious head injury during Friday’s game.

During the third quarter of Rochester’s Week 6 game against Shenango, Mason took a hit to the head. After the hit, Mason was able to make his way to the sideline before going unconscious. He was then life-flighted to a Pittsburgh area hospital where he remained unconscious Friday night, according to a GoFundMe page set up for Mason.

Sunday morning, Rochester Area School District Athletic Director Bradley Verrico provided an update on Mason’s condition.

“Carter looks much better than he did on Friday night. He is breathing on his own, and doctors have removed the intubation,” Verrico said in an email. “They have also stopped the sedation, and he is briefly opening his eyes and is scheduled for an MRI. Both his mother and brother are with him.  They are very grateful to everyone and overwhelmed by the community support.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Mason and his family and has already amassed $16,000 and over 300 donations.
