Texas Enters Red River Rivalry as No. 1 Team for First Time in Four Decades

There was no shortage of college football upsets in Week 6.

While Texas enjoyed a much-needed bye week, several top ranked teams in the country suffered devastating losses. Vanderbilt defeating No. 1 Alabama was the most shocking, followed by No. 4 Tennessee losing to Arkansas. No. 9 Missouri was also dominated by Texas A&M.

Due to Alabama’s loss, the Longhorns reclaimed the top spot in the updated AP Top 25 Poll on Monday. This marks the first time since 1984 that Texas will enter the Red River Rivalry as the No. 1 team in the nation.

The last time there was a No. 1 team in the Texas-Oklahoma matchup was in 2008 when the Sooners were viewed the top team in the country. Texas upset Oklahoma 45-35 in that meeting.

The first SEC Red River Rivalry matchup will now feature No. 1 Texas vs. No. 18 Oklahoma. Steve Sarkisian’s squad is viewed as the 14.5-point favorite over the Sooners.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has missed the last 2.5 games due to an abdomen strain, is expected to return against Oklahoma.
