Montgomery police respond to gunfire during ASU homecoming festivities

The Montgomery Police Department responded to multiple reports of gunfire at 8 p.m. Saturday in the tailgate area of the Alabama State University campus in the 1100 block of Carter Hill Road, but no injuries were reported.

The university had a two-day homecoming event featuring a Sexxy Red concert Friday night. Both MPD and the Alabama State University Department of Public Safety received reports of multiple gunshots Saturday.

On Friday night, sirens erupted across the event, where people where tailgating and enjoying their food. About 15 police vehicles lined Carter Hill Road at about 9 p.m. An ambulance left the scene of an accident, and at least one person reported hearing automatic gunfire.

On Saturday night, officers responded to the scene and confirmed that an unknown number of people fired gunshots into the air. Law enforcement reported no injuries to people or property after responding to the scene.

There was no active shooter on campus, said Ken Mullinax, the ASU public relations director. ASU’s public safety department advised the ASU community to seek a safe place for the remainder of the evening.
