Hollywood celebrities campaign for Kamala Harris in Phoenix before early voting begins

The TV character Olivia Pope may not be able to get Kamala Harris elected in real life, but the actress who plays the popular political fixer on “Scandal” hit the campaign trail Oct. 6 to turn out voters for VP Kamala Harris in Arizona.

Kerry Washington barnstormed the battleground state with a star-studded cast of campaign surrogates made up of actors Glenn Close, Jessica Alba and Michael Ealy.

“I’m not here as Olivia Pope. I am here because I want each of you to remember how powerful you are,” Washington said Sunday at a campaign office in Maryvale, a reference the character she played on “Scandal.” “Each of you has the power to transform the trajectory of this country.”

There’s less than a month to go until Election Day, and mail ballots will start going out across Arizona even sooner. The last day to register to vote in Arizona’s presidential election is Oct. 7 and early voting begins on Oct. 9.

The presidential campaigns are focused on Arizona because it is one of a handful of states on the Electoral College map where either candidate could win. President Joe Biden won here by the narrowest margin of any state in 2020.
