Kansans send off supplies for Hurricane Helene victims

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Newton church is holding a special kind of community service.

On Sunday, a semi-truck loaded up in front of Grace Church full of supplies to send to those living in the path of Hurricane Helene. The semi will head to North Carolina.

“I was really worried we wouldn’t fill the semi,” said Traylee Pickens, the donation drive organizer. “I was really worried we weren’t gonna have enough stuff, and I don’t know if we can make it all fit.”

Pickens started putting together the donation drive on Wednesday after seeing pictures of the devastation on the East Coast sent to her by her dad and husband, both linemen helping with recovery.

“Those pictures were terrible, so I thought, what can we do here,” Pickens said.

That’s when she called on Grace Church in Newton for a hand.

They got her a semi-truck and some volunteers.
