A $38 million investment to upgrade a shipyard in Bayou La Batre is set to create big changes for the local maritime industry and workforce.
International shipbuilder Birdon is behind the project, which will expand the shipyard’s capabilities and bring 136 new jobs to the area.
This investment is part of a growing wave of economic development in Bayou La Batre, with local officials excited about what this means for the region’s future.
Major Facility Expansion Underway
Birdon recently provided updates on its plans for the former Metal Shark Boats yard, which it acquired earlier this year.
The upgrade will include a brand-new 65,000-square-foot vessel fabrication center, equipped with a cutting-edge welding system that will boost efficiency and quality.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is supporting these advancements through grants, helping Birdon bring this “revolutionary” technology to Bayou La Batre.
