Man killed by train in East Rochester identified

A 23-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a train over the weekend in East Rochester, according to police.

East Rochester Police Chief Michael Brandenburg said that Noah Law of East Rochester was walking home from work around 2:45 p.m. Saturday, when he was struck by an oncoming Amtrak train. The crash occurred near West Commercial and North Washington streets.

Law was walking along the railroad tracks when he tripped and fell onto the tracks, Brandenburg said.

“Despite efforts from the train crew, the collision was unavoidable,” he said in a news release.

According to Amtrak, the passenger train was traveling west between New York City and Toronto when the crash occurred. Approximately 135 people were on board. No other injuries were reported.

The fatal incident “serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by walking or being near railroad tracks,” Brandenburg said.

Although railroad tracks can appear to be quiet or inactive, the area “can become hazardous within seconds,” he said. “Walking, running, or taking photos on or near the railroad tracks is not only extremely dangerous but also considered trespassing on private property.”
