South Dakota House and Senate races to know Nov. 5 in and around Sioux Falls

Eastern South Dakota’s legislative representation is at play in 2024.

Voters from each of the state’s 35 legislative districts are choosing who will represent their best interests in Pierre this general election year.

Some races were already decided in the June primary, but a number of contests could affect whether the predominantly Republican state sticks with the supermajority or shifts slight more Democratic.

How are legislative terms structured?

The South Dakota Senate consists of 35 members, while the South Dakota House of Representatives has 70. Members of both chambers cannot serve more than four consecutive, two-year terms. Elected legislators receive a annual salary of $13,436 and a $166 tax exempt per diem for legislators who live more than 50 miles from the state capitol.

State Senate candidates who are named alone in the following lists are running unopposed this general election and will automatically earn a seat in the legislature.
