NYC Mayor Loses Another Official

Additional Coverage:

New York City’s Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, Phil Banks III, has resigned amid the ongoing corruption scandal involving Mayor Eric Adams. Banks’ resignation follows that of two other city officials on Monday.

Rana Abbasova, the mayor’s international affairs director, has also been dismissed. Abbasova has reportedly been cooperating with federal investigators looking into the mayor’s conduct.

The resignations come as the federal investigation into city contracts and police enforcement of nightlife regulations continues. Banks’ brother, David Banks, previously resigned as schools chancellor.

Banks, once the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the NYPD, had his phones seized as part of the investigation. He previously faced corruption allegations during a different scandal.

Mayor Adams has pleaded not guilty to charges of bribery and fraud and has resisted calls for his resignation. He claims that New Yorkers support his continued leadership.
