Driver dies in El Paso Whataburger parking lot shooting on Sunland Park Drive

El Paso Police Department detectives are still sorting through a late-night shooting that resulted in the death of a driver in the parking lot of a Whataburger restaurant near Sunland Park Mall over the weekend.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the parking lot of the Whataburger at 650 Sunland Park Drive next to Cromo Drive, police said.

The man who died was identified on Monday in a police news release as Edgar Gabriel Lucero, 37, of Sunland Park, New Mexico, who was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima.

Police have not disclosed how the shooting unfolded or if any arrests had been made. A news release issued Monday stated that the DWI Task Force responded to assist at the scene of the shooting in the parking lot.

The DWI Task Force arrested Hector Manuel Lopez Jr., 45, of El Paso, who was in a 2020 Ford F-150, on a charge of driving while intoxicated for the second time for allegedly driving drunk while in the Whataburger drive-thru.
