Man tased, arrested after incident that sparked evacuation of apartment building

Police used a Taser to subdue a man in a downtown Minneapolis apartment Monday evening, after fears that shots were being fired sparked the building’s evacuation.

Minneapolis Police Department says a 34-year-old man was arrested for property damage after refusing to leave his apartment on the 10th floor of a building in the 10 block of East Grant Street.

Police had been sent to the building on reports of shots fired, and officers say they heard suspected gunfire when they arrived on the 10th floor hallway. However, following the man’s arrest, police have not been able to determine whether any gunfire actually took place.

As a standoff unfolded, the MPD SWAT Unit and Crisis Negotiations Team were called to the scene, both of which assisted with the wider evacuation of the building.

Per MPD, the man in the apartment “broke a hole through the wall leading into the hallway,” and proceeded to throw items from the window and through the hole in the wall.

The incident ended when officers distracted the man, used a Taser on him, and took him into custody.
