Bergen County man found guilty in the 2021 killing of girlfriend

A Washington Township man was convicted Monday of murdering his girlfriend in a horrific stabbing that took place in the quiet community in 2021.

A Bergen County jury just hours into their first full day of deliberations found Patrick Camilli, 59, guilty of killing Mary E. Huber, 51, a woman he had been dating for nearly 18 years and whom he had called “the love of my life.” Camilli was also found guilty of two counts related to his possession of a kitchen knife he used to end Huber’s life.

Several cries could be heard inside the courtroom as the foreman announced the verdict.

The trial began on Sept. 17, and with a few days off, ended with closing arguments Oct. 3 after nine days of testimony. The jury deliberated for roughly an hour on Oct. 3 before returning Monday, reaching a verdict about two hours after they convened.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors produced evidence, including autopsy reports, showing the 12-member jury (plus two alternates) a myriad of injuries to Huber’s body, with over 29 stab wounds and 20 blunt force injuries. Assistant Prosecutor Craig Becker told the jury Camilli’s actions were motivated by “control” after there had been friction between the couple due to Camilli’s inability to hold steady work or contribute to the household, with it all coming to head around midnight on Oct. 23, 2021.
