Glenville man charged with threatening parishioners with hammer at 4 area churches Sunday

A Glenville man was arrested after police allege he threatened churchgoers with a hammer at multiple churches around York and Adams counties on Sunday morning, court records show.

Odell Potter, 53, of the 500 block of Glenville Road in Glenville, faces a felony count of terroristic threats to cause serious public inconvenience, and misdemeanor charges of simple assault and disorderly conduct, according to charging documents filed by Conewago Township Police Department.

Potter was unable to post $25,000 bail, and remains confined inside Adams County Prison, court records show.

The charges stem from an incident at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Conewago Township on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, the documents said.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by the Conewago Township Police Department, police were first called to the basilica and school on Basilica Drive around 11:02 a.m. for callers reporting a male threatening churchgoers with a hammer.

As officers were arriving, they were informed that the man had just left in a green pickup truck, and officers quickly located the vehicle on Edgegrove Road and initiated a traffic stop, the affidavit said.
