New dog park opens on South Hill, replaces larger “unofficial” dog park

SPOKANE, Wash. — Pups in Spokane have a new dog park to explore on the South Hill.

The dog park opened on Monday at the corner of 63rd and Regal, near Mullan Road Elementary.

It replaced the unofficial dog park that previously closed because of the construction of the Peperzak Middle School.

Peggy Milster lives on South Hill and was disappointed to see the unofficial dog park close.

“The old park was huge and it had a lot of trees, a lot of open space. It had pathways all the way around it,” she said.

The old dog park was roughly 10 acres. The new park is only 1.6 acres.

“There’s just not very much parking and it’s a big, big change from the first one,” said Milster.

Even so, Milster and others at the park said they are happy there is still a dog park where local pups can come to play.

“For the folks that live in the apartments around here, it is ideal,” said Tim Guthrie, who spent a lot of time at the previous park with his dogs and grandkids.

“They can play together at our house. We have a fenced yard and a fair bit of room. But then, there are only two of them. Here they get to meet others,” he said.
